Air adalah sumber kehidupan yang paling penting bagi semua makhluk hidup. Namun, seiring dengan pertumbuhan populasi manusia, perkembangan industri, dan polusi lingkungan, pasokan air segar di dunia semakin menipis. Menurut data penlitian yang dipaparkan Ho, Bahar, dan Koo, hanya sekitar 3% dari total air di dunia adalah air segar, sementara 97% sisanya adalah air laut yang asin dan tidak dapat langsung dikonsumsi. Akibatnya, banyak orang menderita kondisi kesehatan buruk dan bahkan meninggal karena konsumsi air yang tercemar.Salah satu solusi yang sedang dikembangkan untuk mengatasi masalah ini adalah teknologi pemurnian air laut menggunakan metode solar still desalination. Metode ini menawarkan cara mengubah air laut menjadi air segar dengan menggunakan tenaga matahari, sebuah sumber energi terbarukan yang berlimpah. Solar still adalah sebuah perangkat yang memanfaatkan energi surya untuk memanaskan air laut di dalam sebuah wadah (basin). Air laut kemudian menguap dan naik ke atas permukaan kaca (kondenser) dari solar still. Di sinilah kondensasi terjadi, dan air segar mengalir ke wadah penampungan.Solar still memiliki desain sederhana dan dapat dengan mudah dibuat, sehingga menjadikannya pilihan yang menarik untuk mengatasi masalah krisis air segar. Meskipun memiliki potensi yang besar, solar still menghadapi tantangan dalam hal produktivitas. Proses evaporasi dan kondensasi yang terjadi pada solar still cenderung berjalan lambat, sehingga produksi air segar yang dihasilkan relatif rendah. Berbagai penelitian telah dilakukan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan produktivitas solar still. Penelitian ini mencakup penggunaan teknologi dan desain yang berbeda untuk meningkatkan panas yang masuk ke solar still dan mempercepat proses evaporasi dan kondensasi.Kelompok peneliti Universitas Sumatera Utara dan Muroran Institute of Technology Jepang telah menemukan satu material yang dinilai cocok untuk kawasan Indonesia. Sibagariang, Napitupulu, Kawai, dan Prof. Himsar Ambarita mengungkapkan jika cangkang kelapa sawit yang dulunya dianggap sebagai limbah industri, menunjukkan potensi besar dalam berbagai aplikasi berkat sifat-sifat uniknya. Bahan ini tidak hanya membantu mengurangi limbah, tetapi juga meningkatkan produktivitas energi, terutama dalam bidang distilasi surya.“Salah satu keuntungan utama dari cangkang kelapa sawit adalah sifat termalnya yang tinggi. Cangkang kelapa sawit dapat menyerap dan menyimpan energi panas secara efektif. Dalam konteks distilasi surya, cangkang kelapa sawit dapat meningkatkan suhu dalam perangkat distilasi, mempercepat proses penguapan air, dan menghasilkan lebih banyak air tawar,” sebut Prof. Himsar.Dalam proses distilasi surya, air dipanaskan hingga menguap, kemudian uap tersebut diubah menjadi air tawar melalui kondensasi. Sifat termal cangkang kelapa sawit meningkatkan efisiensi proses ini sehingga membuatnya lebih efektif dalam menghasilkan air tawar, lanjut Prof. Himsar.Sebagai limbah dari industri kelapa sawit, cangkang kelapa sawit tersedia dalam jumlah besar dan bisa didapatkan secara gratis atau dengan biaya yang sangat rendah. Hal ini menjadikan cangkang kelapa sawit sebagai alternatif yang cost-effective dibandingkan dengan bahan lain yang mungkin lebih mahal. Cangkang kelapa sawit dapat digunakan sebagai bahan bakar atau penyimpan panas sehingga membantu mengurangi biaya produksi dalam aplikasi distilasi surya. Hal ini memberikan keuntungan ekonomi yang signifikan, terutama bagi daerah-daerah yang memiliki industri kelapa sawit.Lebih lanjut, Prof. Himsar menjelaskan penggunaan cangkang kelapa sawit sebagai sumber daya juga berkontribusi terhadap keberlanjutan lingkungan. Dengan memanfaatkan limbah industri kelapa sawit, kita dapat mengurangi jumlah limbah yang harus dibuang atau diolah. Selain itu, penggunaan cangkang kelapa sawit dalam aplikasi energi terbarukan membantu mengurangi penggunaan bahan bakar fosil, yang pada gilirannya dapat mengurangi emisi karbon dan dampak negatif terhadap lingkungan.“Cangkang kelapa sawit dalam distilasi surya terbukti mampu meningkatkan efisiensi energi secara keseluruhan. Cangkang kelapa sawit membantu menjaga suhu yang tinggi dalam perangkat distilasi, mempercepat proses penguapan dan kondensasi. Hasilnya, lebih banyak air tawar yang dihasilkan dalam waktu yang lebih singkat. Dengan meningkatnya efisiensi energi, perangkat distilasi surya yang menggunakan cangkang kelapa sawit menjadi lebih produktif dan bermanfaat, terutama di daerah-daerah yang memiliki akses terbatas terhadap air bersih,” kata Prof. Himsar.Dalam penelitian yang mereka lakukan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan cangkang kelapa sawit dalam distilasi surya meningkatkan efisiensi eksersi, yang merupakan ukuran seberapa baik perangkat tersebut mengubah energi yang tersedia menjadi energi yang berguna. Dalam studi tersebut, distilasi surya dengan 5 kg cangkang kelapa sawit mencapai efisiensi eksersi 2,879%, sedangkan distilasi surya konvensional hanya mencapai 2,255%. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa cangkang kelapa sawit dapat memberikan peningkatan signifikan dalam efisiensi eksersi, membuat distilasi surya menjadi lebih efektif dan bermanfaat.Pemilihan cangkang kelapa sawit menurut mereka memberikan peluang bagi industri untuk menjadi lebih berkelanjutan dan ramah lingkungan dalam mengelola limbah industri kelapa sawit. Penggunaan cangkang kelapa sawit dalam distilasi surya juga dapat membantu daerah-daerah dengan akses terbatas terhadap air bersih untuk menghasilkan air tawar secara lebih efisien. Terlebih wilayah geografis Indonesia terdiri dari setidaknya 17.000 pulau. Banyak diantaranya yang belum mendapatkan akses air bersih yang memadai.“Secara keseluruhan, cangkang kelapa sawit memberikan solusi inovatif dan berkelanjutan untuk tantangan energi dan lingkungan di masa depan. Melalui penggunaan cangkang kelapa sawit, kita dapat mengubah limbah menjadi sumber daya yang bernilai dan memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap keberlanjutan planet kita,” pungkas Prof. Himsar.

As the most common type of cancer affecting women, breast cancer affects the sufferer not only physically but also emotionally and socially. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2020, there will be more than 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer worldwide, making it the highest incidence type of cancer globally. In addition, WHO reports that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide. Therefore, finding an effective treatment with minimal side effects to overcome breast cancer is an important task for researchers around the world.Breast cancer occurs when breast cells grow uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors include reproductive history, such as not having children or having the first pregnancy late in life; exposure to hormones or hormone replacement therapy; lifestyle factors, such as lack of physical activity and poor diet; and exposure to radiation during breast development. Genetic factors such as gene mutations can also increase the risk of breast cancer.One of the pathways that play an important role in breast cancer development is the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway. This pathway regulates cell growth and proliferation, and when dysfunction occurs due to mutations or other modifications, it can lead to rapid cancer growth. PI3K inhibitors have been the focus of research due to their potential to inhibit cancer growth. However, to achieve the best results, combination therapy is often required.This became the reason for Prof. Poppy A.Z Hasibuan, Urip Harahap, Panal Sitorus, and Denny Satria to try to find ingredients that can contribute to overcoming the dangers of breast cancer. The Universitas Sumatera Utara Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Biology experts explored the potential of natural resources spread across Indonesia. According to them, the source of the concoction should be easily obtained and utilized by society.Their research yielded sweet results by discovering the potential of the Vernonia amygdalina Delile plant. The plant, which originates from West Africa and has been used in traditional medicine for many years, contains various chemicals such as flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, fatty acids, and steroidal saponins that have important pharmacological activities, including anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-obesity properties."Recent research evaluated the potential of Vernonia amygdalina Delile leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of 4T1 breast cancer cells via the PI3K pathway. The study found that the leaf extract has the ability to affect cancer cell growth by inhibiting the PI3K pathway. This result is very promising, considering that the PI3K pathway is one of the main causes of uncontrolled cancer cell growth," said Prof. Poppy.Even so, Prof. Poppy explained that the use of Vernonia amygdalina Delile leaf extract as a breast cancer therapy is still in the early stages of research. Nevertheless, preliminary results have shown great potential. The combination of therapy using PI3K inhibitors and leaf extracts could be a breakthrough in breast cancer treatment in the future. Further research is still needed to confirm these preliminary results and understand how this leaf extract works precisely.They mentioned that the healing process for breast cancer patients requires holistic support and treatment. Apart from undergoing medical treatment, patients also need emotional and social support. Alternative therapies such as Vernonia amygdalina Delile leaf extract, if proven effective, may be an additional option that can improve patients’ quality of life."Research on the potential of Vernonia amygdalina Delile leaf extract in inhibiting breast cancer cell growth through the PI3K pathway offers new hope for breast cancer patients. Not only that, but the research conducted also shows the results if Vernonia amygdalina Delile leaf extract has the potential to be used in other cancer therapies," explained Prof. Poppy.Although further research is still needed to ensure the effectiveness and safety of its use, this leaf extract has great potential to become an important part of breast cancer therapy in the future. Political parties serve as the link between the government and the people, while the legislature and the executive work together to shape and implement policies that move the country towards a better future. The roles and dynamics between these three components significantly influence Indonesia's political stability and progress.At its core, politics is about how the state is managed and how power is distributed. Indonesia has gone through a period of transition from an authoritarian regime to a more inclusive democracy. Along with these changes, the political system has undergone significant transformation. Democracy emphasizes the importance of political instruments in forming stable and well-functioning bodies. Political infrastructure and superstructure, including political parties, play a central role in ensuring the smooth running of the political process. Political parties function not only as intermediaries between the government and the people but also as checks and balances for the executive and legislature.Prof. Muryanto Amin mentioned that Indonesia has a complex multiparty system. In legislative elections, several political parties fight to get the most votes and seats in parliament. He mentioned an interesting point, namely that the party that receives the most votes in the legislative election does not always win the executive election. When the political party that receives the most votes in the legislative election does not win the executive election, the relationship between the two can become strained. This challenge requires more efforts to maintain government stability and encourage constructive cooperation.The phenomenon was further researched by Prof. Muryanto Amin together with Prof. Humaizi, Suci Rahmadani, and Muhammad Yusuf. In the election of governors, regents, or mayors, political parties are often involved, resulting in the formation of coalitions. The greater the number of supporting parties, the greater the number of party machines that will work to win the candidate. On the other hand, the party supporting the candidate pair that won the Pilkada is also assumed to get high votes in the legislative elections," explained Prof. Muryanto Amin.This is not always the case. They conducted research on the 2013 North Sumatra regional election contestation. The Governor and Vice Governor candidate pair of Gatot Pujo Nugroho and Tengku Erry Nuradi (also known as GANTENG) was promoted by two parliamentary parties, namely Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) and Partai Hati Nurani Rakyat (Hanura), garnering 1,604,337 votes.Meanwhile, in the previous Pilkada in 2008, Syamsul Arifin and Gatot Pujo Nugroho (also known as SAMPURNO) were supported by Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP), PKS, Partai Bulan Bintang (PBB), Partai Patriot Pancasila, Partai Karya Peduli Bangsa (PKPB), and Partai Persatuan Nahdlatul Ummah Indonesia, garnering 1,396,892 votes. This shows that popularity and the number of supporting parties do not always determine high vote acquisition but still increase the chances of winning the contestation."Despite having won the Pilkada battle in 2013, PKS and Hanura did not become champions in the 2014 legislative elections. This is evidenced by the results of the legislative elections showing that the two parties only obtained a total of 19 seats out of 100 seats in parliament," said Prof. Muryanto Amin.The small numbers obtained by the coalition supporting the government (Governor and Vice Governor of North Sumatra) can make decisions or policies difficult when the support of votes or seats in parliament is limited. Difficulties also arise when the winner of the legislative election does not win the executive election. This phenomenon demonstrates the complexity of Indonesia's political system and demands flexible adaptation from the parties involved.Legislative elections tend to bring changes in the distribution of seats in parliament. Political parties that previously dominated the executive through regional head elections now face challenges maintaining their influence in parliament. The effect, they argue, is that when political parties lose seats in parliament, they also lose political power that can influence policies and decisions. This creates difficulties for the executive in gaining support from the legislature when making decisions. A harmonious relationship between these two bodies is essential to ensure government stability and policy effectiveness.In response, they look at the pattern of the executive and legislature in forming effective political communication. When both parties can communicate well, the policy and decision-making process becomes smoother. For example, in discussing the regional regulation draft on the North Sumatra provincial tourism development master plan, smooth political communication between the executive and legislature helped overcome challenges and develop a comprehensive plan. The agreement reached reflects how good political communication can produce policies that benefit society.In the conclusion of their research, they mentioned that the navigation of political dynamics in Indonesia is heading in a complicated and unpredictable direction. Thus, managing the executive and legislative branches is a challenging task, given the complexity of the multiparty system. Despite the challenges, the country continues to evolve and adapt to the political changes taking place. The winner in the executive election may not necessarily dominate in the legislative election, and vice versa, the winner in the legislative election may not necessarily win the executive election contestation.“Effective collaboration between political bodies and parties can bring stability and progress to Indonesia. In an era of democracy that continues to develop, the role of political parties and legislative and executive bodies is vital in shaping the country's future," explained Prof. Muryanto Amin.In exploring Indonesia's political journey, we can appreciate the complexity and dynamics underlying this country's government and policies. USU PR - So far, shrimp shells are often considered as waste, but in the hands of Professor of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Prof. Dr. Harry Agusna, MSc, M.Phill shrimp shells are not just waste but something that can be processed into Chitosan compounds.&nbsp;Prof. Dr. Harry Agusnar, MSc, M.Phil, a Professor from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, managed to make shrimp shell chitosan into several useful products that are closely used in daily activities.&nbsp;Prof. Harry Agusnar utilizes shrimp shell chitosan as the main ingredient to make handboy lotion, hand sanitizer, chitosan paper soap, and recently face serum from chitosan with anti-aging claims.&nbsp;His interest in researching and processing chitosan waste began in 1987 while continuing his master's degree at the Universiti of Kebangsaan Malaysia. At that time, this Professor of FMIPA USU conducted research using aromatic chemicals. According to him, Chitosan has a lot of potential. &nbsp;&nbsp;"So I tried aromatic chemicals so that compounds from c6 - c10 could be separated. This is what makes us interested in doing research," he said when met at his house on Wednesday (07/06).&nbsp;Initially, Prof. Harry's family was skeptical about the potential of shrimp shells, but after being applied, the research product caught their attention.&nbsp;The process of producing chitosan is fairly simple. Prof. Harry explained that first the shrimp has been separated from the skin, then the skin is stored for drying or directly soaked in alkaline water to remove odor.&nbsp;"Do not cook (shrimp shells) because it can damage (eliminate compounds). I just soak it and it becomes the ingredient," he explains.Furthermore, to neutralize the odor, the protein and minerals contained in the shrimp shell are removed first.&nbsp;So far, the products that have been produced by Prof. Harry have received a good response from many parties. One of them is the Chitosan Hand Sanitizer and Chitosan Paper Soap products that were given and used by the community during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. He made a breakthrough in alcohol-free hand sanitizer from the chitosan.&nbsp;Unfortunately, these products have not been circulated to the public because they still meet several requirements to be disseminated, one of which must have a company. Therefore, Prof. Harry hopes that the university can enthusiastically help the product distribution process so that it can be used by the wider community.&nbsp;Reportedly, Prof. Harry will still have 4 products to be introduced, namely, hair tonic from chitosan, shampoo, conditioner, and yarn from chitosan.&nbsp;"I made the product that I produced and there will be 4 more products coming hair tonic from chitosan and shampoo, conditioner, and one more collaboration, we make yarn. We hope that the university can be enthusiastic, and help how the existing products can be circulated and used by the public," he concluded.

USU professor turns shrimp shell waste into face serum

USU PR - Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) together with three other institutions consisting of Bina Nusantara University (Binus), Serdang Bedagai Regency Government (Sergai), and PT Mega Medica Pharmaceuticals (MMP) have conducted collaborative stunting research, which has succeeded in reducing the stunting rate by 38 percent in Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. The 6-month research collaboration, which was attended by 20 health centers, 6 urban villages, and 243 villages in Serdang Bedagai Regency, has proven that giving syrup containing a combination of cork fish extract, meniran, and temulawak from PT MMP is proven to reduce stunting rates. Research Team Leader Prof. Bens Pardamean, B.Sc. M.Sc., Ph.D., in a research report on the registry study of stunting prevalence in Sedang Bedagai Regency, said the research was conducted through the Integrated Database System. Along with the &nbsp;development of technology and the increasing trend of public confidence to \"back to nature\", the significant &nbsp;biodiversity in Indonesia is one of the supporting factors for the development of skincare products from natural &nbsp;ingredients.&nbsp;The increasing effects of skin damage caused by factors that trigger aging require &nbsp;chemoprevention strategies by utilising natural material extract as natural sources, such as medicinal plants, that &nbsp;are safer and more effective in the treatment process, in contrast to the innovation produced by the USU team of &nbsp;Community Service that utilises natural ingredients, namely acem-acem leaves &nbsp;(Oxalis dehradunensis Raizada), which have been studied to increase skin moisture and effectively remove &nbsp;facial spots. This innovative product is a solution developed with natural raw materials and has good properties to &nbsp;reduce exposure to free radicals, able to reduce wrinkles and shrink pores on the face, and significantly able to &nbsp;reduce blemishes and spots on women's skin. Through this anti-aging cream, farmers can better care for and maintain &nbsp;healthy skin and reduce the risk of premature aging in farmers.&nbsp;Through community service activities focused on two villages, Sumber Mufakat Village, &nbsp;Kabanjahe District, as a partner location producing acem-acem leaves, and Karang Gading Village, Secanggang &nbsp;District as a partner who has been using and testing the Comunity Service team's innovative products, USU lecturer &nbsp;team conducted education and training for the use of these materials. This service was led by Dr Eka Lestari &nbsp;Mahyuni, SKM, M.Kes, from the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Sumatera Utara together with Prof Dr Urip &nbsp;Harahap, Apt, and involved 5 (five) students from the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Sumatera Utara.&nbsp;This activity aims to empower women farmers in Karang Gading Village, Secanggang &nbsp;District, Langkat Regency and Sumber Mufakat Village, Kabanjahe District, Karo Regency. These two areas were brought &nbsp;together in a virtual socialisation and FGD, which was attended by both village chiefs, Karang Gading Village Chief, &nbsp;Bahrul and Sumber Mufakat Village Chief, Drs Dinis Karo-Karo as well as the Wanita Tani Tangguh Farmers Group from &nbsp;Karang Gading Secanggang Village and Karo women farmers as well as officials from Sumber Mufakat Kabanjahe Village. &nbsp;Participants who attended the socialisation were selected to act as business agents who will be entrepreneurs of &nbsp;acem-acem leaf extract anti-aging cream.&nbsp;The activity to utilise acem-acem leaf extract anti-aging cream is so that farmers can &nbsp;also get the benefits of cream that can moisturise the skin, shrink pores and reduce spots and wrinkles on the face &nbsp;due to sun exposure and free radicals. &nbsp;Dr Eka hopes that although women farmers are always on the move in the fields under the &nbsp;sun, they can also maintain their skin health so that they remain beautiful and youthful. USU Lecturers Receive Patent for Self-Care Invention

The HI Cloud Viral start-up, started by Dr Eka Lestari Mahyuni, SKM, M.Kes, from the Faculty of Public Health, &nbsp;Universitas Sumatera Utara, will be producing hand washing soap containing acem-acem leaf extract that is able to wash &nbsp;off chemical exposure.", &nbsp;"description": "PT HI Cloud Inovasi Natural or also known as start-up HI Cloud Viral has &nbsp;organised a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) which discusses the business opportunities of the innovative product &nbsp;produced, the hand soap gel of acem-acem leaf extract (Oxalis dehradunensis Raizada) with the name Clodesis.&nbsp;The discussion was attended by stakeholders from five city districts, including Medan &nbsp;City, Binjai City, Langkat Regency, Karo Regency and Deli Serdang Regency, as well as BPPOM, lecturers and students. &nbsp;The agencies present were from the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Department of Industry and &nbsp;Trade, alongside with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of Medan City. The products offered have been researched &nbsp;since 2018 and are ongoing until now.&nbsp;Currently, the HI Cloud Viral start-up pioneered by Dr Eka Lestari Mahyuni, SKM., M.Kes, &nbsp;from the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Sumatera Utara, will produce hand washing soap containing &nbsp;acem-acem leaf extract, which is able to clean off chemical exposure. The potential of acem-acem leaves &nbsp;that were explored, researched and studied by Dr Eka Lestari Mahyuni, SKM, M.Kes interests PT Stara Bintang Surya to &nbsp;cooperate and collaborate in the production of acem acem leaf extract gel hand soap with brand name &nbsp;Clodesis, which was established from the Matching Fund program. The programme brings together Higher Education &nbsp;personnel from Higher Education with DUDI (Dunia Usaha Dunia Industri) partners through the Kedaireka &nbsp;platform in 2022.&nbsp;The research began in 2016 with Dr Eka Lestari Mahyuni, SKM, M.Kes's interest in Karo &nbsp;farmers' handwashing habits. This was also done while empowering farmers to reduce pesticide exposure. Dr Eka &nbsp;explained that the natural ingredients used in the product are found in Tanah Karo. &nbsp;\"Acem-acem leaves, which Karo farmers usually use to clean their hands after spraying &nbsp;pesticides or other field activities, inspired me to further study the properties of these leaves. Phytochemical &nbsp;tests in the laboratory showed that the leaves have a very high saponin content, which is evident from the natural &nbsp;froth that we can see from the natural use by farmers.&nbsp;This saponin content is utilised and used as a soap for hand washing since, generally, &nbsp;in agricultural fields, water and soap are not available. However, chemical exposure requires farmers to improve &nbsp;personal hygiene to avoid the risk of poisoning from chemical exposure, such as pesticides, chemical fertilisers, &nbsp;etc. Therefore, these leaves are then extracted and made into a gel-based hand washing product so that it can be &nbsp;packaged in a simple, easy-to-carry package, and helps improve the personal hygiene of the community through the &nbsp;'Washing Hands with Acem-acem' (CTPAc) programme,\" said Dr Eka.&nbsp;The FGD was held at the Senate Room, 3rd Floor, USU Central Bureau of Administration, &nbsp;where the Head of the Trade Office, H Dammikrot Harahap, SSos, M.Si, served as a guest speaker. He appealed to HI &nbsp;Cloud start-ups as newly pioneered Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to pay attention to product &nbsp;availability, quality, legality and packaging, as well as introducing products to online and offline markets that &nbsp;are widely spread in Medan. He said that the Trade Office has also opened an MSME workshop programme, so it is ready &nbsp;to assist and support start-ups or existing MSMEs. &nbsp;The Head of the Trade Department also reminded that no matter how good the products are, &nbsp;marketing is an important point that needs to be considered. Most of the time, this is the weakness of each MSME. That might be more interesting because so far, there has &nbsp;never been a soap that can reduce chemical exposure to fruits and vegetables.
