Undergraduate Program in Nutrition
The Undergraduate Program in Nutrition of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has produced outstanding graduates in the field of nutrition science who are spread throughout Indonesia. The main focus of the Undergraduate Program in Nutrition is to learn the importance of nutrition in human life, the relationship between diet and lifestyle, understanding of nutritional intake, nutrition science, and healthy eating patterns.
Taught by experts in the field of nutrition with national teaching certificates and supported by an integrated curriculum, we have a deep commitment to providing our students with an interactive education and learning experience. We hope that our students can be the best, competent, and able to compete with the times both on a national and international scale. The Bachelor of Nutrition degree opens up opportunities for our students to pursue careers as nutrition consultants, both in the fitness and culinary fields.

Graduates Profile
Students who completed the Nutrition Undergraduate Study Program at FKM USU are entitled to hold the academic title of Bachelor of Nutrition, abbreviated S.Gz. The profile of a bachelor of nutrition is a scholar who can scientifically develop individual, group, and community nutrition services through cross-program and cross-sector cooperation, both government and private-oriented towards professional ethics and fulfilling graduate competencies, who act as community nutrition workers, nutritionists in hospitals and the food industry, researchers in the field of nutrition, consultants in the field of nutrition, and educators.
Duration of Study
The study load is 144 credits, designed to be completed within 8 semesters and a maximum of 14 semesters. One academic year consists of 2 semesters, namely the odd semester and the even semester.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge is the systematic mastery of concepts, theories, methods, and/or philosophies of a specific field of study acquired through reasoning in the learning process, student work experiences, research, and/or community service related to learning. The intended learning outcomes related to knowledge for graduates of the Undergraduate Program in Nutrition are as follows:
- 1Able to understand the basic principles of nutritional science and their relation to biological science, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, and the interactions of micronutrients and macronutrients.
- 2Able to understand nutritional needs and the achieving of nutritional adequacy through the principles of balanced nutrition.
- 3Able to understand food processing principles in relation to efforts to enrich food nutrition and the fulfillment of nutritional requirements in overcoming nutritional issues at both individual and community levels.
- 4Able to understand various nutritional issues, including undernutrition and overnutrition, and their relation to various risk factors for nutritional issues and their impact on tropical health.
- 5Able to understand various nutritional issues throughout the life cycle, understand the causative factors/risk factors, and their impact on growth and development, health conditions, work productivity, and quality of life.
- 6Able to explain the principles of nutritional intervention in tackling individual and community nutritional issues.
- 7Able to explain the principles of nutrition education and nutrition counseling.
- 8Able to explain the measurement methods for determining nutritional status.
- 9Able to understand the principles of dietetics and the designing of food menus tailored to specific medical conditions.
- 10Able to understand the principles of nutrition promotion and community empowerment.
- 11Able to understand the principles of developing technology-based food products and food service management.
