Anniversary
The date of August 20th is designated as the anniversary (Dies Natalis) of USU (Article 7).
Academy Attire
USU has academic attire and student attributes (Article 12, section 1).
Emblem
The emblem of USU is used on buildings, offices, seals, certificates, and everything that holds a formal position regarding the power, authority, and ownership of USU (Article 8, section 2).
The emblem of USU is in the form of a floral arrangement with the following elements, colors, and meanings:
- A golden yellow star symbolizing the height of knowledge based on faith and piety;
- An arrangement of white jasmine flowers symbolizing noble character;
- An arrangement of yellow rice stalks symbolizing that the more knowledgeable one becomes, the more humble one should be; and
- An arrangement of green tobacco leaves symbolizing Deli Tobacco, a local product from the region where USU is located.
Flag
USU has a rectangular flag with a dark green base color. In the center, there is the USU logo, and below it, there is the inscription "Universitas Sumatera Utara" (Article 9, section 1).

Brand Guidelines for Transformation Towards the Ultimate
Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) continues to improve in its efforts to internationalize the campus. As is known, campus internationalization is the main target launched by the USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., in the 2021-2026 period. To achieve this, he carries the tagline “Transformation Towards Ultimate”.

This is in accordance with the mandate of Article 27 section (1) of Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014 on the Statute of USU. The General Policies of USU for the 2016–2021 period were established through MWA Regulation No. 17 of 2016, which encompasses both academic and non-academic areas.
