<p>The Soil Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has launched a <strong>Laboratory Usage Guidebook</strong>. This guidebook serves as an essential resource for students, lecturers, and researchers to conduct laboratory activities safely, efficiently, and in compliance with standard operating procedures.</p><p>The guidebook covers several key components, including:</p><ul><li><strong>Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs):</strong> Technical guidelines for conducting soil biology experiments and analyses, from sample collection to data processing.</li><li><strong>Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):</strong> Information on safety procedures, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response steps to prevent accidents.</li><li><strong>Equipment Usage Guide:</strong> Instructions on the functions, operation, and maintenance of key laboratory tools, such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, and soil microorganism analysis equipment.</li></ul><p>During the Guidebook Socialization Webinar, the Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Lisnawita, S.P., M.Si., emphasized that the guidebook marks a significant step forward in fostering a professional and safe laboratory environment.</p><p>"We hope this guide will raise students' awareness of the importance of OHS and train them to work systematically in the laboratory," she stated.</p><p>The Head of the Soil Chemistry and Biology Laboratory, Dr. Benny Hidayat, S.P., M.P., highlighted that the guidebook was developed based on hands-on experience in managing laboratory operations, particularly in the field of soil biology.</p><p>The preparation of the guidebook also involved expert contributions from soil biology lecturers, including Prof. Ir. T. Sabrina, M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., and Dr. Mariani Br. Sembiring, S.P., M.P., as well as students of the Soil Science program in the Agrotechnology Department who have experience in laboratory management.</p><p>One student, Suranti Pratiwi, expressed her pride in being part of the guidebook's development process. The guidebook will be distributed in digital format to all laboratory users, and regular training sessions on its content will be held each semester to ensure comprehensive understanding.</p><p>With the introduction of this guidebook, research and practical activities in the Soil Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture at USU are expected to become more structured, safe, and capable of producing high-quality results.</p>
