This community service activity is one of the concrete forms of collaboration between academics and the community to advance the local agricultural sector in North Sumatra. Lecturers of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FP USU) held a community service activity entitled “Pengembangan Kapasitas Produksi Jamur Tiram, Diversifikasi, Serta Manajemen Strategi Pemasaran Produk Olahan Jamur Tiram,” which took place at Saddam Mushroom House, Marelan neighborhood 14, Rengas Pulau Village, Medan Marelan District, Medan City, North Sumatra. During the activity, TPM USU consisting of Prof. Dr. Ir Yaya Hasanah, M.Si, Nursa'adah, S.ST, M.Agr, Dian Pebriyani, S.P, M.P, and assisted by 5 Food Science and Technology students and 2 Agrotechnology students, in collaboration with the Saddam Mushroom House farmer group provided training to the community to make preparations from oyster mushrooms, such as oyster mushroom dumplings and oyster mushroom nuggets. TPM USU also provided direction on how to market the community's processed products to the outside world through e-commerce and directly. “We are here to help you produce products that make customers more interested in the products you create. For example, marketing products online and offline,” said Yaya Hasanah in her presentation at the training session on Saturday (14/9/2024). Dian Pebriyani as the accompanying lecturer also added about the importance of choosing the right color for the packaging or products that we sell. “For example, the use of red and yellow colors is easy to attract the attention of the general public,” said Dian. “We don't need to always post the products we sell. We can also create content related to the products we sell so that customers will be more interested,” added Nursa'adah. After this training, it is hoped that people in the Medan Marelan area, especially Rengas Pulau Village, will be more motivated to process oyster mushrooms that have only been marketed in raw form. Saddam as the owner of the Saddam Mushroom House farmer group, expressed his gratitude to TPM USU for providing very useful briefings and training, as well as a new steamer that will be very useful in the future. “Hopefully, this knowledge can improve our quality, starting from the production of mushroom seeds to their processing, which will benefit more people,” said Saddam. After the training, TPM USU also handed over processed oyster mushroom products to the community such as oyster mushroom dumplings and oyster mushroom nuggets, as well as a number of tools that are useful in oyster mushroom farming, such as a steamer for sterilizing oyster mushroom baglogs, a meat grinder, a light fire extinguisher (APAR) and also heat-resistant gloves. “We hope that the handover of this tool can help the community in Rengas Pulau Village cultivate oyster mushrooms and produce processed oyster mushroom products that are known to the wider community,” said Yaya Hasanah. This community service activity is a concrete form of collaboration between academics and the community to advance the local agricultural sector in North Sumatra. USU PR - The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a public lecture, with the theme “Opportunities and Challenges for Young People Towards a Golden Indonesia 2045”. It took place at the USU Auditorium, on Friday (1/03/2024).This public lecture brought in the Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic Indonesia (RI), General TNI (Ret.) Dr. H. Moeldoko, S.IP, M.Si, as the sole speaker. He will open insights related to the challenges faced and formulate strategies to face the long journey towards the Golden Indonesia 2045.USU Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si. emphasized that this public lecture reflects USU's strong desire and aspiration to realize a prosperous, highly competitive, and equitable Indonesia in 2045. Young people, who are the hope and backbone of the nation, have a very important role in realizing this dream.“They are agents of change, innovators, and initiators or prime movers towards the golden Indonesia that we aspire to,” said Prof. Muryanto.Furthermore, the USU Rector explained the challenges that the young generation needs to face as the backbone of the nation. These challenges involve social, economic, environmental issues, climate change, economic disparities, and challenges in building inclusive and equitable leadership. This is part of the test that must be faced.“Therefore, in achieving the Golden Indonesia 2045, we need to equip ourselves with knowledge, skills, and mental toughness. The courage to innovate, the spirit to learn and adapt, and integrity,” explained Prof. Muryanto.In line with that, General TNI (Ret.) Dr. H. Moeldoko, S.IP, M.Si, explained that the government has a strategy to face various challenges, both in terms of geopolitics and domestic challenges. With the target of becoming a developed country by 2045, the government is trying to prevent Indonesia from being trapped in the middle-income trap, especially towards 2036 which is considered a critical period.“We hope to become a developed country by 2045, but there are various challenges. We have a strategy that young people should also know. There are five strategies,” explained Dr. Moeldoko.One of these strategies includes solving problems in the agricultural sector. Therefore, General TNI (Ret.) Dr. H. <img src="https://konten.usu.ac.id/storage/posts/28661/cD5mtjx3Y9.jpeg" alt="Image">In his presentation titled “The Role of University in Supporting Sustainable Agricultural,” the Rector recommended some matters related to food estate development in Indonesia.Among the recommendations, Dr. Mury proposed the establishment of Food Estate Authority Board (abbreviated in Indonesian as BOFE) that supported by university R&amp;D.BOFE pattern is not meant to acquire the community land, but the concept is to have profit sharing and manage the existing food estate in Indonesia so that food estate program can be maximized in accordance with the expectation of the President Joko Widodo.&nbsp;According to Dr. Mury the establishment of BOFE will ease the food estate management as it is supported by the research and development from the academics of several universities. “So, we, from the university can also contribute in this BOFE.” he said.&nbsp;Food estate program has been very successful in Japan and China. According to the Rector, this success cannot be separated from the role of academics in its development process.The program itself, according to Dr. Mury, is an appropriate strategic step in down-stream agricultural industry. Nevertheless, there are still obstacles and challenges in the program.&nbsp;“The challenges are in the structural and cultural. Structural challenge related to governance in government, while the cultural related to community life pattern that tends to put aside the agriculture as main source of income,” he said.&nbsp;<img src="https://konten.usu.ac.id/storage/posts/28661/iIhANAXPZl.jpeg" alt="Image">Facing those challenges, the Rector recommends some points to maximize food estate program. Other than proposing to establish BOFE, Dr. Mury also recommends to do university mobilization to guard the socio-cultural transformation in life style changes, livelihood and daily activities.&nbsp;“Reviewing local partnership with investor model in managing land ownership, that model needs to be aligned with Reforma Agraria program,” he said.&nbsp;His other recommendation is to develop agricultural activity on environmentally friendly capital. Last but not least is to protect local sacred community sacred through more productive form such as the use of economically valuable and exotic plants.&nbsp;In this occasion, USU Rector as the keynote speaker is side by side with Drs.
